Country of Origin: Amazon Basin
The Red Foot tortoise is a tropical specie of tortoise originating from South America. They are a medium sized tortoise growing to a maximum of 40cm with males generally being larger.
Their natural habitat ranges from savannah to forest edges around the Amazon Basin. Their shell is mostly a dark brown to black with each scute having a pale centre. In the wild, Red Foot tortoises will graze follow, which means that they will follow other Red Foots nearby whilst grazing.
No tortoise can thrive in our climate and all need a primary home indoors. Tropical tortoises, such as the Red Foot tortoises may however, be let out into the garden during the summer when the weather is hot and sunny but remember to ensure there is a shaded place available and the garden is secure.
