The crested gecko is a small arboreal gecko from the islands of New Caledonia. They were thought extinct until 1994 when they were rediscovered and are now a popular pet specie.

Thy have hair like projections above their eyes that resemble eye lashes and a crest that runs from each eye to the tail which gives them their name. Crested geckos have a prehensile tail with a unique sticky pad at the tip.

They can shed their tail if they feel in danger but unlike most geckos the tail will not regrow. It is thought this is due to the gecko being unable to reproduce the specialised sticky pad.
