The Black legged dart frog is the second most toxic of the wild poison dart frogs. The poison kills any animal that attempts to eat the frog with the exception of one species of snake (Liophis epinephelus) which is resistant. These frogs produce an alkaloid based poison on their skin that they create from the food they eat. The insect responsible has been suggested to be a small beetle from the family Melyridae. In captivity these frogs do not produce their toxin due to a lack of the suitable food source.
