East-African land snails grow to a length of 12-20cm and can live for up to 10 years. They are simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning they possess both sexual organs of males and females and they have been known to reproduce asexually.

African land snails can seal themselves inside their shells in a process called aestivation during droughts and can maintain this for up to three years.
