Caresheets

With over 50 years collective experience in the reptile trade we have a wealth of knowledge on offer to help with any reptile related problems you may have.
These care sheets are written by the staff at Reptiles Plus and are how we would suggest caring for and keeping each of the following animals.

Thermostat Fact Sheet

Royal PythonMany of you will already be aware of the benefits of thermostats, but for those of you who don’t already own one or are thinking of buying a new set-up, we would like to outline just how important these pieces of equipment can be to your animal’s health.

As you will probably know, reptiles are cold blooded and require a thermal gradient inside their enclosures. Equally as important is that the ambient temperature remains stable, so that your reptile can thermo regulate at its choosing. Without a thermostat you will have a heat source that is constantly producing heat at the same rate. This creates a problem when the exterior temperature around the tank changes. For example, a day that started out cold can suddenly warm up if the sun comes out.

Temperature

At lower temperatures than your animal requires, its body starts shutting down i.e. Digestive and immune system.
At higher temperatures than required its body goes into overload and this can result in serious harm or death.

Simply turning your heat source ON or OFF is not an option either, as you will still get temperature fluctuations and you will be removing the thermal gradient creating a whole host of new problems for the future. In addition to this, neither extreme of temperature will necessarily cause obvious symptoms before permanent damage has been done.

Further to this we personally have noticed a rise in the sale and purchase of inappropriate thermostats. By this we mean the sale of ‘on/off’ or mat stats for normal incandescent light bulbs. All this will achieve is a flashing light and most probably a broken thermostat and blown bulb with no possibility of getting your money back.

In response, below, we have listed the most popular thermostats and their uses. If you are told otherwise or are unsure, please read the instructions before buying or using a thermostat.

Digital Dimming Day/Night Thermostat with Timer

Dimming Thermostat

This thermostat is suitable for most heaters and can be used with two heaters on a timed schedule. Separate day and night temperatures can be set and the stat will display a continual readout of the current temperature and time. There is an alarm feature to warn if the temperature goes above or below set temperature parameters.

Measures to 0.1°c. Maximum 600 watts. 12 months guarantee.

The Dimming thermostat is designed specifically for controlling light bulbs. It is one of the most accurate methods of temperature control and can be used on almost any heaters. This is the only thermostat we recommend for use with incandescent light bulbs. Instead of pulses of power being supplied to the heater, it is supplied with a continuous variable supply of power or voltage to match the heat requirements of the vivarium.

Minimum 40 watts, maximum 600 watts. 5 year guarantee.

Digital Temperature Thermostat with Timer

Pulse Proportional Thermostat

ON/OFF Thermostat suitable for ceramic heaters, heat mats and cable. It can be used with two heaters on a timed schedule. The stat will display a continual readout of the current temperature and time. There is an alarm feature to warn if the temperature goes above or below set temperature parameters.

Measures to 0.1°c. Maximum 600 watts. 12 months guarantee.

The sophisticated pulse proportional thermostat is ideal for controlling higher power ceramic heaters and heat mats to provide an accurate constant heat source. The pulse proportional thermostat pulses electricity to the heater all the time, resulting in constant and very accurately managed warmth. This thermostat is not suitable for controlling light bulbs. The constant turning on and off of the light bulb would not only distress your animals, but would cause frequent failure of the lamps. This, in turn, is very likely to make your thermostat fail.

Maximum 600 watts. 5 year guarantee.

Digital Temp with Day/Night with Timer

Temperature Thermostat

ON/OFF Thermostat suitable for ceramic heaters, heat mats and cable. It can be used with two heaters on a timed schedule. Separate day and night temperatures can be set and the stat will display a continual readout of the current temperature and time. There is an alarm feature to warn if the temperature goes above or below set temperature parameters.

Measures to 0.1°c. Maximum 600 watts. 12 months guarantee.

The Temperature Thermostat is an ON/OFF switching device, that can be used with heat mats, heat cable and ceramics. It has an accurate dial calibrated in both Fahrenheit and Celsius. This thermostat is not suitable for controlling light bulbs.

Maximum 300 watts. 5 year guarantee.

Mat-Stat

The Mat Stat is an ON/OFF thermostat and can be used with heat mats and heat cable. This thermostat is not suitable for controlling light bulbs.

Maximum 100 watts. 5 Year Guarantee.
